Concessions

Listed below are some of the main Concessions, Support and Benefits available to people living in the Warrington area.

BLUE BADGE - Parking concession for disabled people available to people who have considerable difficulty with walking or are blind. For a more detailed criteria or application form contact Social Services on 01925 444239.

RADAR TOILET KEY - Disabled people may need to use a Unisex wheelchair accessible (disabled) toilet. Most of these toilets are accessible via the National (RADAR) key. Warrington Borough Council provide such keys free of charge (Replacements are chargeable). They are available from the Warrington Contact Centre, Horsemarket Street Tel 01925 443322. However, proof of disability may be required. Keys can also be purchased from the Warrington Disability Partnership Information Stall within the retail market Tel: 01925 240855 and at Shopmobility within the Golden Square Tel 01925 231941.

BT FREE DIRECTORY ENQUIRY SERVICE - for disabled people who have problems handling or reading a telephone directory, or who are blind or severely partially sighted, or have a severe learning disability. Telephone 195 for more details and/or an application form.

COUNCIL TAX REDUCTIONS - A one band reduction or a discount may be available if a resident has a severe disability, uses a wheelchair, has a room adapted and/or is predominantly used by a disabled person. A reduction may be available to a live in carer who is not directly related to the disabled person. Contact Warrington Borough Council - Council Tax Office on 01925 442198.

SPORT, RECREATION AND LEISURE DISCOUNT SCHEME - is accepted in all Golden Gates Leisure facilities. The scheme entitles card holder to a discount. The scheme is available to Disabled People living in the Borough of Warrington. It also allows for a carer/enabler to be allowed free admission. ROAD TAX EXEMPTION - is available to people who are receiving the higher rate of Disability Living Allowance Mobility Component. The vehicle must be registered in the name of the disabled person or in the name of the nominee. For more details contact Driver Vehicle Licensing Centre, Swansea and request leaflet V188. DIAL A RIDE - A local charity providing accessible door to door transport for disabled and older people. For an application form and/or more details Telephone 01925 419988.

WHEELCHAIR VOUCHER SCHEME - available from the Warrington Wheelchair Assessment Centre operated by Warrington Primary Care NHS Trust. A voucher valued to the cost of a wheelchair for which you have been assessed can then be used towards another wheelchair of your choice, for example, can be used to purchase light weight or sports wheelchairs that may not be available direct from the service. CAR ADAPTATIONS - Financial assistance may be available to adapt your car with specialist hand controls, seating, ramps or hoist. The disabled person must be receiving the higher rate of the Mobility Component of DLA. Contact Motability on 020 7928 0101.

FREE TEMPORARY WHEELCHAIR LOAN SERVICE - operated by Warrington Disability Partnership from their Beaufort Street Centre for Independent Living wheelchair are available on free loan for up to six weeks. For more detail telephone 01925 240064.

RAIL - DISABLED PERSONS ASSISTANCE - Most mainline trains and stations have facilities for disabled people. For more details telephone 0845 6040123/First North Western.

TELESHOP - is a private company offering a home shopping service by telephone, they offer a frozen meal service as well as a large range of well-known brands of food plus fruit and vegetables, meat and bread. For more details telephone 01928 579755.

CARE AND REPAIR - Local voluntary organisation offering advice on a range of services re repairs and improvements for elderly and disabled people. Contact 01925 414916.

EMPLOYMENT - The Disability Employment Advisor based at Job Centre Plus, Mersey Street can offer advice and support to disabled people seeking work or to organisations who seek to retain a member of staff who becomes disabled. Telephone 01925 785400.

LIFELINE ALARM SCHEME - WBC operate a monitoring service for community alarms, telephones and pull cords. For more details telephone 01925 263275.

CONCESSIONARY TRAVEL SCHEME - There are 3 local schemes, Disabled Persons, Blind Persons and Senior Citizens. The Schemes entitle the pass holder to travel at half fare on journeys within the County of Cheshire. For more details contact WBC on 01925 442228.

WARRINGTON DISABILITY PARTNERSHIP - Offers a wide range of disability related services including information on local and national support groups, local social and health services, holidays and days out, accessible transport, equipment for independent living, publications, relationships, sexuality and disability, employment, education and training etc.

DIRECT PAYMENTS - If you are entitled to receive a service from Social Services, then it may be possible for you to receive money needed to purchase those services from elsewhere. Direct Payments can enable you to become more independent and in control of your life. COMMUNITY LAW CENTRE - Can offer advice and representation in Welfare, Benefits, Housing, Repossessions, etc. Telephone 01925 651104.

PRINCESS ROYAL TRUST WARRINGTON CARERS CENTRE - situated in the bungalow at Garven Place, the Centre is 10am - 2pm open Monday, Wednesday and Friday. AGE CONCERN WARRINGTON - Offers advice and support on all matters relating to people over 55 years of age including support groups, benefits, housing, insurance, employment, health, etc. Telephone 01925 633198.

AGE, DISABILITY and CARERS RELATED WELFARE BENEFITS - The three main welfare benefits are: -

  • Attendance Allowance. Applicants must be over 65 and require substantial assistance with daily living.
  • Disability Living Allowance. Applicants under 65. Requiring assistance with mobility and/or personal care.
  • Carers Allowance. Applicant must be providing support for over 35 hours to a person in receipt of AA or DLA (care component at the middle or higher rate). For more details Telephone 01925 246000.
